At the moment of birth, your baby’s umbilical cord contains a rich source of stem cells. These cells are young, flexible, and have not yet been exposed to environmental factors, making them incredibly valuable for future therapeutic use — for your child, siblings, or potentially matched family members.

Our Proven Process

Collection

Immediately after birth, your doctor or midwife will collect the cord blood and tissue using the CryoSave collection kit. This process is:

  • Completely painless
  • Non-invasive
  • Takes only a few minutes

Transport

You or your partner simply contact CryoSave within two hours of birth. We operate 365 days a year and arrange for secure, temperature-controlled transport to our lab in Pretoria.

Testing & Processing

Each sample undergoes a strict quality check, including:

  • Total nuclear cell (TNC) count
  • CD34+/CD45+ marker analysis
  • Viability checks and microbial cultures
  • Fluorescence microscopy for tissue samples
  • Maternal blood screening for infectious diseases

Processing is done using a closed, semi-automated Sepax system, ensuring consistency, sterility, and accuracy.

Cryogenic Storage

Stem cells are preserved in the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen at -180°C. Global studies show stem cells stored this way remain viable for over 20 years.

We continually monitor all samples. If ever needed, your child’s cells can be shipped in cryogenic tanks to any transplant facility worldwide.
